How Much Leaf Removal Costs: Per Visit, Per Acre and Per Season
What a fall leaf cleanup costs by lot size and acreage, what actually drives the price, how many visits a season takes, and the Chesterfield County rules.
How much does leaf removal cost?
Most residential leaf cleanups run $200 to $500 per visit. A small lot with a couple of maples starts near $150. A heavily wooded half acre that needs two passes runs $600 to $1,000 across the season. The number that moves the price is not your lot size, it is how many cubic yards of leaf a crew has to move and haul away.
Typical prices by lot size
| Lot | Light tree cover, one visit | Heavy tree cover, full season |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1/4 acre | $150-$240 | $330-$430 |
| 1/4 to 1/2 acre | $245-$330 | $430-$600 |
| 1/2 to 1 acre | $445-$570 | $800-$1,050 |
| 1 acre and up | $600-$760 | $1,100-$1,450 |
These cover blowing beds and hard surfaces, collecting the lawn, hauling the debris off site and a final mow. Rates run higher in the Northeast and on the West Coast and lower through the Midwest and South; the ranges above sit near the middle, and match what providers charge in Central Virginia.
What actually drives the price
- Tree cover, not acreage. One mature oak can drop more volume than a quarter acre of open lawn collects all autumn. Two identical lots on the same street can differ by double.
- Hauling versus mulching. Mulching leaves into the turf with a mower is the cheapest option and feeds the soil. Once the layer is thick enough that you cannot see grass after a pass, it has to be hauled, and haul-away is most of the bill.
- Access. A crew that can back a trailer to the lawn works faster than one carrying tarps around a fenced back yard or up a slope.
- Timing. Booking the last two weeks of the season, when every crew is full, costs more than booking in September.
How many visits does a season take?
One cleanup is enough for lots with mostly maples, poplars and sweetgums, which drop early and together. Anything with mature oaks needs two, because oaks hold their leaves for weeks after everything else is bare. A single early cleanup on an oak lot looks finished for about ten days and then buries the lawn again.
Bagged, blown to the curb, or hauled
Where you live decides which is even available. Some municipalities run a curbside vacuum through autumn and crews simply blow leaves to the verge, which is the cheapest arrangement anywhere. Others take bagged leaves with regular collection, which caps what a crew can leave behind. Where neither exists, everything is hauled and the cost is higher for the same lawn. Check your own locality before comparing a quote against a neighbor in the next county.
Leaf removal in Chesterfield County, Virginia
Chesterfield County does not run a curbside leaf vacuum. Leaves go out in paper bags with your regular trash, thirty pounds or so at a time, or they go to a provider with a blower, a tarp and a trailer. On a wooded Brandermill or Woodlake lot that is the difference between a weekend and a phone call.
What a Chesterfield cleanup costs
| Lot | Light tree cover | Heavy tree cover (two visits) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1/4 acre | $190-$240 | $330-$430 |
| 1/4 - 1/2 acre | $245-$330 | $430-$600 |
| 1/2 - 1 acre | $445-$570 | $800-$1,050 |
| 1 acre + | $600-$760 | $1,100-$1,450 |
Prices are per cleanup and include blowing beds and hard surfaces, mulching or hauling, and a final mow. Haul-away of the volume a mature oak drops is most of the cost, which is why the same lot can double between a sunny street in Charter Colony and a wooded one in Roxshire.
One visit or two
Chesterfield's oaks drop late: the heavy fall is mid-November into early December, weeks after the maples. A single cleanup in early November looks great for ten days. The plan that works on wooded lots is a first pass around November 10-20 and a final pass in the first two weeks of December. On lots with mostly maples and poplars, one visit in mid-November is enough.
Mulch them or haul them
A light leaf layer can be mulched into the lawn with a mower and it feeds the soil. The limit is coverage: if you cannot see grass through the leaves after one pass, mulching will smother the fescue you just overseeded. Under mature hardwoods, haul. In beds and natural areas, a two-inch leaf layer left in place is fine and Brandermill's standards treat it as compliant landscaping.
Why leaves matter more the year you overseeded
New fescue seedlings from a September overseeding are two months old when the oaks drop. A week under wet leaves kills them. If you aerated and seeded this fall, book the first cleanup early and ask the crew to blow, not rake, so the seedlings stay put.
Gutters, storm drains and the street
Blowing leaves into the street is a county code issue and clogs the storm drains that keep Swift Creek and the reservoir clean; crews we match do not do it. Gutter cleaning is a separate quote, usually $120-$200 for a single-story home, and worth doing after the final leaf drop rather than before.
Bundling with mowing
If you already have a weekly mowing provider, the cleanup is usually cheaper because the crew is already on your street and can mulch lighter drops during regular visits, leaving only the heavy weeks for a dedicated cleanup. Ask for the "fall bundle": the last four mows plus one or two cleanups at a set price.

Questions homeowners ask
How much does leaf removal cost?
Most residential cleanups run $200 to $500 per visit. Small, lightly wooded lots start near $150; a heavily wooded half acre that needs two visits runs $600 to $1,000 for the season. Volume of leaves drives the price far more than lot size does.
How much does leaf removal cost per acre?
Roughly $450 to $800 per visit for an open acre with light tree cover, and $1,100 to $1,450 across the season for an acre under mature hardwoods. Hauling the volume is most of the cost, so a wooded acre can be triple an open one.
Is it cheaper to bag leaves yourself?
Yes in cash, no in hours. A quarter-acre lot under mature trees is roughly 40 to 60 bags and a full weekend. Paying for it buys back the weekend and the trip to the yard-waste site.
Does Chesterfield County pick up leaves?
No. There is no curbside leaf vacuum. Leaves go out in paper bags with regular trash collection, or a provider hauls them.
When should I schedule leaf removal in Chesterfield?
First pass November 10-20 and a final pass in early December for oak-heavy lots. One visit in mid-November is enough for maples and poplars.
Can leaves just be mulched into the lawn?
Light layers, yes. If you cannot see grass through the leaves after a mowing pass, they will smother tall fescue and should be hauled.
